Discrimination in Housing Still Occurs

If you think you’ve been discouraged from or denied the housing of your choice, you can call the Housing Center for information and assistance.

The Federal Fair Housing Act protects all people in the United States (citizen or not) from discrimination in housing that is based upon the following protected classes:

  • Race
  • Color
  • Religion
  • National Origin
  • Sex
  • Familial Status
  • Disability

This means that it is against the law to discourage you or deny you the housing of your choice if it is due to one of the above reasons.

In Illinois, additional protected classes include:

  • Sexual Orientation
  • Age (40 and above)
  • Marital Status

Other protected classes exist in local ordinances.
